Assistant Water Resoruces Technician

The Assistant will support the water monitoring program by conducting stream baseflow and highflow measurements and analysis at pre-determined sites throughout CLOCA’s watershed. In addition a Road and Creek Crossing Survey will be conducted by the assistant.

The Authority is currently working with MNR and MOE on the Low Water Response Program. The basis of this program is monitoring rainfall and stream flow within the creeks of our watershed. The Authority has initiated a stream baseflow assessment program. The main objective is to obtain base flow information to assist in the development of a long term baseflow monitoring network. Using a pre-determined distribution of measurement sites, the Assistant will:

• Measure stream velocity using a flow meter
• Calculate flow for each site using Excel spreadsheet.
• Provide the following information at each site:
o Stream temperature,
o Nature of stream condition (riffled, ponding, sluggish, etc.)
o Substrate description (gravel, silt, clay, etc.)
• Populate an Access database for all collected information.

Road and Creek Crossing Survey
The Authority is currently working on updating existing floodplain mapping for several of the smaller watersheds. As a component of the update cross sectional surveys for each road and creek crossing will be required. The assistant will:
• Inventory the dimensions and characteristics of each bridge or culvert structure
• Survey cross-section and profile of creek at the road crossing
• Reduce survey notes in excell

Flood Vulnerable Data Preparation
The Authority maintains a database that identifies areas and structures that are vulnerable to flooding. The database utilizes several GIS layers that require considerable post processing quality control. The assistant will work in ArcMap, to ensure that the layers meet the requirement of the database.

The pay rate for this position is $10.25 per hour depending on qualifications and is based on a 35-hour work week with the possibility of weekend or evening work.

Requirements

English: Required, Written, Spoken

Education: Some College, Some University

Qualifications - The successful candidate should have the following:
• University/college student with experience in engineering or environmental resources or technology
• Comfort with doing field work and working with field equipment
• Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access (ArcView software knowledge is an asset)
• Valid Ontario G driver\'s license
• Transportation to CLOCA office

The following are desirable, but not mandatory:
• Land surveying
• Operation of a flow meter
• Contour map reading
• ArcMap or GIS experiance
• Current first aid/CPR certification

1) residents of Ontario;
2) legally able to work in Canada;
3) between the ages of 15 and 24.
