Autism is a neurological disorder affecting three key areas of development to varying degrees: communication, behaviour and social skills.
Autism may also have an impact on the way an individual processes sensory information.
Autism Ontario - Durham Region is a regional chapter of Autism Ontario, a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that every individual
with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is provided the means to achieve quality of life as a respected member of society. Currently serving
hundreds of families throughout Durham Region, we rely on donations from individuals and members of the business community to fund
our programs and services.
Our mission is to:
- share information through free access to our website and email newsletter, monthly workshops, and autism resources
donated by our chapter to the public library system (available throughout Durham Region via interlibrary loan)
- offer support through free monthly autism support groups for parents and caregivers at various locations through
the Durham Region and through our Realize Community Potential (RCP) Program Coordinator who is available to
meet 1:1 with parents to develop family support plans
- encourage friendship by hosting family events and programs for the community throughout the year
- raise public awareness through Autism Ontario's annual "Together for Autism" campaign ( www.togetherforautism.ca)
- facilitate advocacy through our chapter's representatives to the Special Education Advisory Council for both the public
and Catholic school boards
